Fred Becker of the Becker Institute

Communicating with Your Teenager

Learn how to increase the communication between you and your child and develop a closer bond.

"It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. But what it really takes is first a dedicated parent or parents to raise a child and then the support of a village. Parents can no longer afford to allow other agencies and services to raise their kids. It is time for Parents to do their job"   - Fred Becker 2004

The Becker Institute was founded by Fred Becker in 1990 with the sole purpose of helping adults in Developing Self-reliant and Responsible Children, Back to The Basics. Fred is a licensed professional educator with over 34 years experience working with adolescents and parents as a classroom instructor, special projects trainer and program director. He has been instrumental in the development and implementation of programs in the areas of substance abuse, violence, multicultural relationships, classroom management, parent involvement, character development, and adult/child relationships.

He is a popular speaker for community groups, schools and business at both the local and national level. Fred has received numerous awards, including recognition by the San Diego Business Community as Outstanding Educator, Educator of the Year, by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, and Prevention Educator of the Year. He is a member of the National Drug Prevention Task Force, Schools for Kid, and the California School/Law Enforcement Partnership.

He has also authored a number of educational tools and courses, and most recently, co-authored Power, Control and Trust: Getting What You Want in an Adult World. His most treasured rewards are a healthy 38-year marriage, two prospering grown children, and correspondence with others whose lives he has helped change.

Fred has a gifted ability to create a safe learning environment, encouraging open communication of feelings and problem solving. His courses and workshops are lively, interactive, emotion-packed and life-changing. His honesty and positive attitude make Fred a trusted and sought-after teacher, trainer and presenter

First Thursday Group - May 7, 2009

Posttraumatic stress has been called an "invisible epidemic" because so many people suffer from symptoms without understanding the cause or source. Indeed, many stress-related conditions are misdiagnosed as mental disorders.

While posttraumatic stress symptoms can be complicated, when understood as a stress condition, we are led logically and simply to a stress reduction/stress management model for getting better. "Radical self-care" is the approach to healing.

On May 7th we will continue our dialogue about the science of trauma, and of healing from traumatic conditions, with Dr. Karen Hawthorne who has been studying and teaching this science for the past twenty years.

Please join us Thursday, May 7 at 6 PM
Julian Library Community Room

This meeting is sponsored by the Community Parenting Group.

First Thursday Parenting Group

March 12, 2009  -  6:00 PM

Julian High School,  Room 4

 Speaker: Carol A. Bartz, Ed.D.

*We were unable to have Dr. Bartz attend on any first Thursday due to her schedule so being flexible, as we know all parents have to be, we scheduled the second Thursday!!!

Dr. Carol Bartz has worked in public schools in Illinois and California for more than 35 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy, a master’s degree in learning disabilities and emotional disturbance, and a doctorate in educational leadership.

Dr. Bartz has served as the Director of the North Inland Special Education Region in San Diego for 12 years.  Prior to her current position, she has been a speech and language therapist, resource specialist, program specialist, diagnostician, head teacher at a special center, director of pupil services, and principal of an inner city elementary school. She has done extensive training at universities, and presents workshops at local, state and national conferences. Dr. Bartz and her husband are the parents of an adult son with disabilities, who now lives independently.

Dr. Bartz works extensively with state and federal legislators in drafting laws that impact the provision of special education services.  Her input was incorporated into IDEA ’04.  She is currently working with key Congressional representatives to more appropriately address accountability measures for students with disabilities in the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind. Her book, The Special Ed Administrator’s Personal Trainer, will be released by LRP Publications this spring.

For our evening Dr. Bartz will be defining many terms used in the special education process and will give an overview of services. Please join us for an informative evening. Bring your questions and your concerns.  First Thursday Parenting Group will continue to bring speakers to  our community. We were very pleased with the attendance at our last meeting. Thank you all for your support. It was a great evening! Dr. Karen Hawthorne will be returning May 7th for Part II of her PTSD meeting.

    Planning for Change
    With Fred Becker
    May 13, 2008
    6pm - High School

Children from ages 12-18 go through the second most rapid social, emotional and physical changes of their lives.  This presentation provides parents with the information and skills they need to deal with their changing adolescent.  You will develop an understanding of what is happening to your child and what you can do to help prepare your child socially/emotionally for the real world.  We plan for their education but not for their social/emotional development.

    Learn about:

    1. Physical changes and their effects on children

    2. Environmental changes in school and community

    3. Social changes-exposure, pressure and outcomes

    4. Brain development changes in frontal lobes
